Number of children living in home with loaded, unlocked firearms unchanged

Roughly 4.6 million U.S. kids stay in a family with loaded and unlocked firearms, in line with a analysis letter printed on-line Feb. 22 in JAMA Community Open.

Matthew Miller, M.D., Sc.D., from Northeastern College, and Deborah Azrael, Ph.D., from the Harvard T.H. Chan Faculty of Public Well being, each in Boston, carried out a nationwide survey (April 15 to 26, 2021) to evaluate family firearm possession and storage. The evaluation included 19,049 adults, one-third of whom lived in households with kids (youthful than 18 years).

  • The researchers discovered that 40.4% of adults with kids lived in a family with firearms, which means 30 million kids lived in households with firearms (7 million greater than in 2015).
  • Of the firearm homeowners with kids, most have been males, White, married, lived in both a rural or suburban space, and had attended some faculty.
  • Simply over one-third of firearm homeowners residing with kids (36.1%) had unlocked firearms, and 37.1% had loaded firearms.
  • Fifteen p.c of gunowners with kids reported storing no less than one firearm loaded and unlocked (least secure), whereas 44.1% reported storing all firearms unloaded and locked.

“The development towards safer storage we noticed in 2021 was offset by the rise within the proportion of adults with kids who lived in households with firearms,” the authors write.

“Our estimate of the variety of kids who lived in a family with loaded and unlocked firearms in 2021 (4.6 million) was not meaningfully totally different from the estimate reported within the 2015 Nationwide Firearms Survey.”
