Depression has become one of the most significant social issues at the moment. You might have heard news about teens and adults committing suicides just because they were depressed and had no one to confront in. The problem is that our society isn’t as accepting as it seems. People feel ashamed and hesitant to tell someone about their fragile state of mind which leads to life taking situations at the end.

Depression is a broad topic. Everyone suffers differently from depression thus it isn’t the same for everyone which is why the experts have classified depression into various kinds so that it can be easier for them to help the individuals and treat them according to their situation.

Types of depression

Major depressive disorder

When we talk about clinical depression, we are mostly referring to MDD. This is one of the most common types of depression that is primarily seen in individuals. The mood disorder can be characterized by some features which are:

  • Depressed mood
  • Lack of interest
  • Weight changes
  • Sleep abnormality
  • Fatigue
  • Guilt
  • Suicidal thoughts

If you see someone suffering from these symptoms, then they are most likely suffering from this disorder so communicate with them to find out more about it.

Persistent depressive disorder

A persistent depressive disorder is a type of disease that it was hard to point out because it doesn’t last for long. We mean that you will suffer from it for days and feel depressed again after at least years which is why it is hard to keep track of it. You can suffer from the moderate, mild or severe persistent depressive disorder.

Bipolar disorder

Bipolar disorder is the type of depression that is characterized by a mood called mania. When you start to feel like your moods are elevating that is probably when you will be suffering from it. This is one of the deadliest depressions because the patients lose the sense of reality and often are hospitalized. Some of the common symptoms are:

  • Fatigue, insomnia, and lethargy
  • Unexplained aches, pains, and psychomotor agitation
  • Hopelessness and loss of self-esteem
  • Irritability and anxiety
  • Indecision and disorganization

Postpartum depression

The other most common depression seen in women is the postpartum depression. Many women suffer from this after their pregnancy. The reason behind the state of depression is the abnormal hormonal changes that take place in the woman’s body after giving birth. Sometimes the mother can also suffer from hallucinations, confusion, and delusions in severe cases.


If you know someone around you who you might think is suffering from depression that you must take to him or her and tell him that it is okay to feel what he or she is feeling and there is nothing wrong with expressing yourself. Once they start to trust you, they will open up to you, and you will be able to help them.

There are cases where you can’t help the specified individual. Then, you should always recommend that he or she sees an expert who can help him with the emotional disorder because it can grow from small to quite large in quite a short amount of time. It is your social responsibility to help those around you so instead of judging anyone make them feel comfortable and acceptable.
